Questions fence company owners ask about marketing
Plain answers for fence contractors on reviews, Google Ads, per-foot pricing on the website, HOA and permit questions, the benchmark data and the free 14-day trial.
How many Google reviews does a fence company need?
More than the two companies the homeowner is comparing you against. Across 12,946 fence contractor listings the median is 16 reviews and 40.5% have fewer than 10. The top tenth sits at 113 or more. A company doing three installs a week can reach 100 in a year if the crew lead asks on install day, when the customer is standing at the new gate. The reviews guide has the script.
Should I put per-foot prices on my website?
Yes, as ranges. "Wood privacy fence from $28 to $42 per linear foot installed" filters out the caller who expected $10 a foot and reassures the one who was quoted $60 by someone else. Companies that hide pricing get more calls and close fewer of them. Put the range, the things that move it (height, gates, grade, tear-out), and a line that says the exact number comes from a free on-site measure.
What does a fence lead cost on Google Ads?
In most US metros a tracked call or form from a fence search runs $35 to $120. Vinyl and aluminum terms cost more than chain link. The expensive mistake is broad match on "fence", which buys clicks from people shopping fence panels at a big-box store and people looking up how to set a post. Exact and phrase match on "fence installation", "fence company near me", "vinyl fence installers" and your city names keeps the money on buyers.
Do Facebook and Instagram ads work for fence companies?
They work in a different way than Google. Nobody opens Instagram wanting a fence, but a before-and-after of a cedar privacy fence with a steel-frame gate stops the scroll in a neighborhood of 1990s houses with sagging wood. Leads run $15 to $50 and arrive softer than a Google call, so the follow-up has to happen in minutes. Spring and the two weeks after a storm are the strong windows.
How do I handle HOA and permit questions in marketing?
Answer them before you are asked. A page or FAQ that explains which towns in your area need a fence permit, what an HOA typically wants (style, height, color, a drawing), and that you handle the submission removes the biggest reason homeowners stall after an estimate. "We pull the permit and prepare the HOA packet" is one of the best lines a fence company can put in an ad.
What should my Google Business Profile show?
Your primary category should be Fence contractor, with the fence styles you build listed as services: wood privacy, vinyl, aluminum, chain link, pool fence, commercial, gates, repair. Photos should be finished installs with the house visible, not stacks of pickets. 46.3% of fence contractors list no hours at all, which looks closed to a Saturday shopper. The profile guide walks through every field.
How do I keep crews busy after the spring rush?
Three ways that work: a fall campaign to the spring estimates you did not win, repair and gate work as a separate offer, and commercial accounts such as property managers and builders who buy on a schedule instead of a season. Southern markets stay busy most of the year, so if you are in Florida or Texas the question is more about Christmas week than winter. The slow-season guide has a month-by-month plan.
Does a fence company need a website if the Google profile already works?
Look at the gap in the data. Fence companies with a website listed have a median of 23 reviews. Companies without one have 3. The site is where a homeowner checks you out between getting the quote and signing it. It needs the fence styles, price ranges, a gallery with addresses blurred, and a tap-to-call button that works on a phone.
What is a good close rate on fence estimates?
Between 30% and 45% for residential work where the homeowner is collecting three quotes. Above 50% usually means you are priced too low. Below 25% usually means slow follow-up or an estimate that is just a number on a text message. A one-page written estimate with a drawing, the material spec, the gate hardware, and the timeline closes better than the same price typed into a phone.
Where does the benchmark data come from?
From public Google Business Profile listings for fence contractors, pulled monthly for every US state, deduplicated by place and summarized. The current report covers 12,946 companies in 50 states. Nothing is surveyed or estimated. Review counts, ratings, website presence, photos and hours are read straight from the listings. See the benchmark report.
Why does the report say the median is more useful than the average?
Because the average of 46.6 reviews is pulled up by a small group of large multi-crew companies, while half of all fence contractors have 16 or fewer. The median tells you where the middle of your competition really is. The 90th percentile, 113, tells you what it takes to be the company Google shows first in a real metro.
What is included in the free 14-day trial?
Any one service on the site, set up and run for 14 days in accounts you own. For Google Ads that means campaigns built, call tracking live, and a cost per call you can check. For reviews it means requests going out after every install. For a website it means a draft on your domain. Ad spend, if any, goes to Google or Meta on your own card. We do not touch it.
What happens after the 14 days?
You get a plain report of what happened and a monthly price if you want to continue. If you stop, you keep everything built: the campaigns, the profile edits, the review link, the site draft. Nothing renews automatically and nobody calls you three times a day. Most owners decide on the strength of the calls they heard during the trial.
Is a credit card required to start?
No. There is no card on file for the trial and nothing to cancel. Ad platforms bill your own card directly for ad spend, so if you try Google Ads you will set a daily budget there. To start, text or call (385) 334-3643 and say which service you want to try.
